The symposium presents a number of keynotes speeches on a wide range of nuclear technology topics such as nuclear medicine, waste handling and management, new technologies together with an overview of renewable energy initiatives and expectations moving forward. The keynotes speeches will be followed by an interactive debate where the panel will discuss the future role of nuclear energy within the European Green Deal.
Keynote Speakers
Prof. Dr. em. Frank Deconinck
Co-director BIAS, Brussels Institute for Advanced Studies VUB-ULB
Frank is one of the leading voices within the field of medical physics and will present the longstanding history of medical nuclear applications in Belgium and expected future developments.
Ir. Marc Demarche
Director General of Niras/Ondraf, Belgian radioactive waste management agency
Marc has a longstanding career within the Belgian radioactive waste management and will talk about the mission of Niras with focus on the social aspects of waste management, the role in dismantling nuclear installations and overall financing of this activity.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Peter Baeten
Director General of SCK CEN, Belgian Nuclear Research Centre
Peter has extensive experience within the nuclear research sector and will focus on the role of SCK CEN in general in the field of nuclear research and more in particular the development of the SMR (small modular reactor) – LFR (lead fast reactor).
Dr. Pieter Vingerhoets
Expert Energy & Climate Strategy at EnergyVille – VITO
Pieter holds a PhD in Physics and has further developed his career within the field of Energy & Climate Strategy. Pieter will provide an overview of the current renewable energy initiatives and expectations moving forward.
Interactive Debate on the role of nuclear energy within the European Green Deal introduced by Ir. Frank Koninckx who will present the vision document, developed by the expertgroup Energy within ie-net, on “(Em)Powering Decarbonisation – Strategic recommendations for a competitive industry of the future”.

Registration fee: €20 (other students) / €40 (others)
People who register for free and don’t show up, will be invoiced a 40€ fine.
